Aiud Citadel

The citadel situated in the centre of Aiud was built in the 14th century, beeing one of the oldest urban settlement from Transilvania. As the archeological researches show that the citadel was buit in two phases, the first one beeing built in the 14th century, while it was a fortified church, and the second phase of construction took place between 16th and 17th centuries, when the walls were extended.

Alba Iulia Citadel

The Alba Iulia Citadel is the most representative fortification of Vauban type from Romania, being built on the plans of the architect Giovanni Morando Visconti. The citadel was built between 1714-1738, but the works on the fortification started only in November 1715, through the building of the Carol Bastion.

 
Bologa Citadel

Bologa Citadel

Bologa citadel was remembered for the first time in official papers in 1304 as Sebuswar, and then nominated with different names like Sepuswar in 1324, Sebeswar in 1329, Castrum regis Hunyad in 1397, Sebes Varallya in 1760. In 1399, as a result of the alliance treaty between the Hungarian King Sigismund of Luxemburg and Mircea cel Batran, to begin the campaign against Turkeys, as a reward, the citadel became property of Mircea cel Batran.

 
Arad Citadel

Arad Citadel

The citadel situated on the left shore of Mures was built using Ferdinand Phillip Harsch’s, on the demand of Queen Maria Therese. It was built having the shape of a star, with 3 rows of underground fortresses and ditches. The construction started in 1763 and lasted 20 years, the main gate and the buidings from the inside were built in Baroque style. On the inside of the citadel there was a catholic church and many buildings for the Franciscan monks.

Bistrita Citadel

The Building of Bistrita citadel started after 1646, moment when Matei Corvin agrred to build fortifications around, although there was before a refugee fortification (13th century) that because of its deterioration was replaced by a more ample fortification.

A first fortified nucleum probably existed close to the parochial church, and in the old historiography there is the interpretation of a fortification that was offering protection in case of siege. In 1465 the citadel had 18 towers and bastions defended by the handicraftsman of the town. In this period Bistrita was one of the most important towns of Transilvania, along with Brasov, Sighisoara and Sibiu.

 
Capidava Citadel

Capidava Citadel

Capidava lies on the right shore of Danube, between the Harsova and Cernavoda towns. The citadel has the form of a quadrangle with long sides from North-West to South-East, having thick walls, over 2 m and 5-6 meters high. The citadel had 7 towers over 10 m, from which 3 towers were rectangular, 2 towers having the shape of a quarter of a circle and another 2 intermediar towers. The gate of the citadel is situated on the Southern-East side and made the connection with the rest of the territory, there was also a strategical exit on the South-Western side of the tower to Danube, where the port lied.

 
Câlnic Citadel

Câlnic Citadel

The Calnic Citadel is situated in the town having the same name, from Alba county, close to Sebes town, at approximately 3 km distance from E 60 to the left. The citadel was built in the middle of the 13th century by commit Chyl de Kelling, having a massive rectangular donjon, surrounded by massive walls, with a tower to the South and a tower of the gate in the Northern Side. The citadel is also surrounded by ditches, that were created for the defending system.

Ciceu Citadel

Ciceu citadel is situated on the common area of the towns Ciceu-Corabia, Ciceu-Giugesti and Dumbraveni, being a medieval citadel built at the end of the 13th century, on a volcanic hill of 683 altitude, from where the name Ciceu came, from the Hungarian word csúcs (top). In 1544 the Tranislvania Diet decided that the citadel should be demolished, so that the area became a career of windmill stones. The domain of the citadel is formed by 63 states, being a citadel that has the role of defending against the tartars.

 
Cluj Citadel

Cluj Citadel

On the actual territory of Cluj there was an important settlement of the Roman Dacia, called Napocca, but short time after Dacia was conquered by the Romans it was destroyed, so that in 124 there was founded a new urban settlement, Municipium Aelium hadrianum Napoca, on the right shore of the Samus (Somes) river. The citadel built by the romans had as borders Canalul Morilor and the Gypsies river. In the period of the 9th-10th centuries there was a settlement called Castrum Clus, that was only a part of the surface of the Roman Citadel .

 
Colt Citadel

Colt Citadel

Colt citadel is situated on the territory of Suseni Village, situated in Hunedoara county on the county road DJ 686, on the entrance on tge Rausorului Valley, 3 km away from Rau de Mori village. The citadel was founded by Candea, at the beginning of the 14th century. Because of its aspect it was supposed to be the inspirational source of the book “ The castle from Carpathians” by Jules Verne.
