The Timisoara Citadel

The Citadel of Timisoara had an important role during feudalism, in the wars against the Ottoman expansion. The first citadel was built by Iancu of Hunedoara on the place where Carol Robert built a castle. It was a simple construction, being fortified with bastions and thick walls and suffered many changes during the time having a massive and imposing look. The citadel built by Iancu of Hunedoara had four gates, called the Ardelean Gate, The Lipovei Gate, The Arad Gate and the Water Tower Gate. The Hungarian King, Carol Robert of Anjou moves the capital, in 1316 in Timisoara, so that the castle becomes  its residence, where he was hosting the foreign ambassadors and also from here was ruling his country.

The Sentinel Citadel

The Sentiel Citadel represented an important defending point, being situated outside of the Citadel of Brasov. Nowadays it is said the name of Dealul Cetatii. It was built at the beginning of the 15th century, first having only a watching tower, completed in 1524 with a wooden bastion with 4 towers. The bastion was destroyed in 1529 by the army of Petru Rares and in 1544 on the place of the old bastion there were built stone walls and there were dug ditches Because of a fire produced in 1618 the citadel was seriously damaged, following that in 1625 to be rebuilt almost entirely and in 1630 it was fortified with 4 bastions.

The Regal Court from Targoviste

The first mentioning of Targoviste as a capital of Tara Romaneasca was made in 1427 by Hans Schiltberger. But as an act belonging ro Mihail 1st shows, the son and rulling associate of Mircea cel Batran, between 1417-1418, Curtea Domneasca is remembered as a capital. The strengthen of the fortifications was probably made during Vlad Dracul, or later during Vlad Tepes. Therefore the citadel has the most important fortifications during the 15th century, for example the defending ditch that had a width of 20-24 m and 4 m deep, being fortified with a wood fence.
