The Giurgiu Citadel

The

The first mentioning of the Giurgiu Citadel dates from the beginning of the 15th century, being named Zorio. As it was a fortified town, Giurgiu had an important role in the wars between Romanians and Turkeys, and then in the wars between Turkeys and Russians.  Still, in 1403 the citadel was functional, supposing that it had been repaired between 1396 and 1403, following that as a result of Mehmed’s the 2nd offensive to be again the possession of the Turkeys in 1420 and to be made new reparations. It is recovered in 1427.

But until 1449 Giurgiu becomes again part of the Ottoman Empire. Because of the crusade between 1461 and 1461, Vlad Tepes will burn it and because of the contra-offensive from the summer of 1462 the citadel was conquered again by Mehmed the 2nd. As a result of this war, the Sultan brings Radu the beautiful as a ruler. In 1594 Mihai the Brave tries to recover the citadel but he doesn’t manage because of the fact that it was signifying fortified by the Turkeys.

The last attempt of the Romanian rulers to occupy the citadel took place during Mihnea the 3rd, who, taking advantage of the defeating of Gian Arslan, on 15th September 1659, attacks and conquers Giurgiu. But, on the 23rd of November, as a result of the defeating suffered by his allies Constantin Serban of Moldoa and Gheorghe the 2nd Rákóczi, the voivode of Ardeal retires.
