The Kemény Castle from Sancrai

The

The Kemény castle from Sancrai, Alba county, was built in 1805 by the Kemény family. The edifice respects the metric and esthetic plans of Barrock, being a mixture between the French Barrock, characterized by a more classical morphology and the one from Northern Italy and Bohemia, characterized by moving shapes. The castle is a result of the both directions proving an eclectic character of the Transylvanian architecture: the main façade and the one from the side with the river. While the façade from the main road doesn’t drag attention, the one from Mures is a contrast, being more picturesque.

The castle is fragmented in 3 buildings separated by perpendicular sides on the flowing direction of Mures, so there are: the central building where the access is made, an exception of the principles of the Barock models with a main entrance to the honor court and loggias on the side where is the river; the building from the left, remarcalble by the 2 plain facades, symmetrically cut and having a tall decorated tower; the building from the right side, that contains elements that seem previous to the rest of the building, as a composition principle.

The central building opens to the exterior by interior monumental stairs, but the dominating accent of the building is offered by the four-level tower, that has a medieval allure.
