The Brukenthal Castle from Avrig

The

The Brukenthal castle from Avrig, Sibiu county, was built in 1760, by the baron Samuel von Brukenthal, who was the the councilor of Maria Tereza and governor of Transylvania for 13 years. In 1761 the palace was leased by the baron Buccow, he arranged the construction like a castle with garden, in the barock style. The Brukenthal castle had 3 buildings in 1762, having the shape of an U, being compounded by a deck-floor and a floor. The hall was decorated by mural paintings and the garden disposed on terraces, with orangey.

Because of Buccow’s death, the construction works of the park remain unfinished as a result of the conflict between baron Brukenthal and the successors of the dead baron. After the dispute settlement, starting from 1768, the rearranging workingst started, so that around 1770 the construction was ready, resulting a castle formed from a main building with two floors and two lateral wings on the ground level, with a gallery that was having more than 200 paintings and 129 gravures made in copper, an Italian-French garden, an English garden.

The baron being familiar with the Imperial parks and with the actual trends of  arranging the gardens, wanted the Avrig park to be arranged very much alike to the gardens from Schoenbrunn and Luxembourg.

In 1908 the Brukenthal castle became possession of the Evangelic Church Council from Sibiu, represented by the Brukenthal foundation, so that it was first constructed a sanatorium and then a hydrotherapy clinic. During communism the castle was nationalized, following that in 1999 to be recovered by the German Minority. From that moment the Brukenthal Foundation tries to maintain the castle and the park in good conditions.
