The Bornemissza Castle from Giurgiu

The

The Bornemissza castle from Giurgiu, Mures county, was built from the ruins of an old fortification situated on the hill that is close to the village. The main building was built in 1731 and was used as a haunting pavilion. Around the castle there is a dendrologic park, that is dating from 1730 and has 29 types of trees and 100 species of exotic plants, that contribute on the increasing of the number of visitors. The family members of Bornemissza leased the domain for 99 years in 1734, following to be built other principal buildings, offering to the castle a pleasant aspect.

Bornemissza family also made significant  industrial investments on the territory of the leased domain. After the 99 years they refused to give the domain back to the state and accept it only with the condition that they will have back the investments they have made. As a result of a process that lasted 27 years, Bornemissza family was indemnified and the domain became property of the state.

Between 1867 and 1870 the domain was leased by Francisc Mackasi’s Austro-Hungarian state and in 1880 the castle was transformed into haunting castle for the principle Iosif. From 1893 the castle became haunting museum.
