The Huniade Castle from Timisoara

The

The Huniade Castle or the Huniazi Castle was built between 1443 and 1447 by Iancu of Hunedoara, on the ruins of the castle built by Carol Robert of Anjou, in the 14th century. The castle built by the Hungarian King was finished in 1316 and became regal residence. The old castle had towers in half-circular plan, serving as a noble residence for all the Hungarian kings until 1552. The works made on the castle belong to the Italian architect Paolo Santini of Duccio.

The Othomans recovered Timisoara in 1552, the castle becoming until 1716 residence of the Beglerbergs. As a result of the Austrian attacks, from 1716 Timisoara stopped being  under the ruling of the Ottomans. The castle was damaged, so that until 1716 was renovated and transformed into barracks of artillery and military deposit.

As time passed the castle suffered many modifications but kept its organization around a court and the position of the Donjon tower. Significant works were made on the main façade, that was rebuilt in the romantic style and also on the windows, that had an arched shape, being decorated in a Neo-Gothic style, sustained by massive columns. The modifications made on the main entrance give the castle a Gothic aspect.
