The Gilau Castle

The Gilau castle, Cluj county, was the residence of the princess Isabella Jagiello Zaploya of Transylvania, in the 16th century. The castle was built in the half of the 15th century, having a quadrlater shape. The edifice has one floor, about 30 rooms and an interior court. Behind the castle there are the ruins of a Roman camp. Around it there were found wooden axes, roman coins, a funerary roman medallion, a bronze statue and bronze statues from the 3rd century.

The first attestation of the castle dates from 1428 as a residence of the Transilvanian Episcopes. On the eastern wall there is a symbol that shows 2 beings holding a crown in their hands and a lion. The element with an artistic value was made in the times of episcope Gereb.

In 1540 the king Ioan Zapolya, hosted at the castle from Gilau, called for the Transilvania Diet and on the 19th of December 1541 here there was signed the treaty with Ferdinand of Habsburg, pursuant to Hungary becomes property of the Habsburgs.

The Castle was seriously damaged during the Curuti Wat, because of an attack leaded by Pecri Lőrincz.

The actual shape of the castle is because of the renovation works made between 1814 and 1822 by the baron Bánffy György.
