The Natural Park Portile de Fier
The Natural Park Portile de Fier lies on a surface of appreciatively 115665,8 ha, being one of the biggest natural parks from Romania, having 18 reservations. It is situated in the Southern-Western country, on the left shore of Danube, between Buzias and Gura Vaii. On its area there are also a part of Banatului Mountains and Mehedinti Mountains and a part of Mehedinti Highland. On the territory of the park there are different kind of plants species strictly protected, the most important being: Tulipa Hungarica that can also be found in Ciucaru mare, Ruscus Aculeatus, Camplanula crassipes, Daphne Laureola, etc. There can also be found the following animal species: the turtle, the horned viper, the wolf, the green lizard.
On the territory of the park there is the Danube defile, which is the longest defile from Europe, being 134 kilometers long, the largest hydro-energetic area from Romania. The area of the park can be considered a real museum, because of its geological diversity and geomorphologic. Here there can be found 1688 species of superior plants and over 5200 species of animals. The existence of some wet areas that are the shelters of many ornithological species on the world level.
As tourist attractions can also be remembered the ruins of the bridge that was built in the Roman Age by emperor Traian and different citadels and monasteries from the area, the most visited being The Medieval Citadel Tricule and Voidita Monastery.
