Big Brother never sleeps: tourists in Romania, monitored by the Special Telecommunications Service

"SIET is a computer application implemented by the Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism, which includes information on tourism accommodation with accommodation functions, recording in real time tourists staying in classified  tourist accommodation establishments. Economic operators or owners managers of tourism accommodation with accommodation functions they have the obligation to respect and fully implement the provisions of this ordinance,according to a draft government ordinance issued by MDRT. Hotel Industry Federation Romania (FIHR) asked the Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism (MDRT), in a letter sent in January, not to introduce Integrated Record Tourists (SIET), because it would bring a number of disadvantages to the industry. Hotels and guesthouses will be required to enroll in a filing system where appears the tourist and the place he is staying. MDRT said earlier this year that the system will help in collecting statistical data and to combat tax evasion. Furthermore, by correlating the information provided SIET, people who have committed crimes and are tracked nationally or internationally can be spotted more easily.
