The Biosphere Reservation Retezat
The Retezat Mountains are part of the Meridional Carpathians, the mountain group Retezat Godeanu, situated between the Petrosani and Hateg depressions. The massive si compouned by cristaline rocks and limestones. The part made of cristalin rocks is called Retezatu Mare and the one formed from limestone is called Retezatu Mic and they unify close to Bucura lake. The Reservation has a surface of 20 000 hectares, being the most important reservation from our country, recognized on the international plan as biosphere reservation. The reservation keeps the traces of the glaciations from once, here there are 82 glacial lakes among which we can remember Bucura, situated in 2041 meters altitude, the biggest from our coutry.
The glacial Bucura lake has a surface of 11 hectares and a 16 meters depth. Here there is also the glacial lake Taul Negru, situated on 2041 meters altitude and being 25,5 meters deep and 7, 5 hectares wide.
The flora is extremely rich, here there are many species of plants, among which 60 are endemic species of the local variations. Also the reservation is populated by a big number of protected animals, among which we remember: the black goat, the marmot, the otter, the eagle, the viper, the bear, the lynx, etc.
The Retezat Mountains have some of the most beautiful sights from the South-Eastern Europe. The mountain is crossed by many tourist tracks, marked by those who enjoy road trippings. For those well trained there are a few climbing tracks. The arranged camping places and the tourist lodges are the accommodation units preferred by the tourists.
