The Biosphere Reservation Danube Delta

The

The Danube Delta is situated in Dobrogea and Ukraine, it is the widest Delta from Europe, about 5050 square kilometers together with the lagunar complex Razim-Sinoe, from which 732 square kilometers belong to Ukrain, the main part measuring 2540 square kilometers. The Danube Delta is bordered on the South-West by the Dobrogea Highland, on the North it forms the border with Ukraine and on the East it empties into the Black Sea. In 1991 it was declared reservation of the biosphere and became part of the UNESCO Patrimony.

Danube has 3 branches: Chilia, Sulina, Sfantul Gheorghe.

The Chilia Branch has 60% of the waters and alluviums of Danube. Because of the million tones of alluviums brought by the Danube, the Delta becomes 40 square meters every year.

The Sulina Branch has a linear flowing, being permanently kept for the navigation of the ships. This branch is 71 kilometers long and represents 18% from the water brought by the river.

The Sfantu Gheorghe Branch has its flowing oriented to the South-East, transporting 22% from the debit of Danube. On its empting it forms the Sacalin Islands, considered a beginning of Secular Delta.

The Danube Delta represents an accumulation relief on the mouth of the Danube into the Black Sea, being included in the category of the regional relief forms such as wet field and alluvium river deposits with a high fragmentation degree, characterized by positive relief called grinds and negative relief forms represented by water filled depressions (lakes).

The Vegetation of the Danube Delta is specific to the muds, predominating the reed, rush, carex, combined with the small willow, being a part of 78% from the area.

The Delta is the shelter of more than 320 bird species, 45 freshwater fish species, in many lakes.

The Reservation also has tourist objectives, so that, along with the major tracks (the branches of Danube and some main canals), necessary for the connection with the settlements and the economical capitalization of the natural resources and the agricultural objectives , forestry and fishing, there are leisure areas and tracks for the trips. The main towns that offer the possibility to admire the beauties of the Danube Delta are: Tulcea, Mahmudia, Maliuc, Crisan, Sulina, Sfantu Gheorghe, Jurilovca, Uzlina, etc.
