Probota Monastery

Probota

Year of construction: 1530

Built by: Prince Petru Rares

Location: Probota, Suceava county

Summary: The paintings from the outside the church St Nicolau are nothing compared to those from the inside, that are part of the most special of this kind from Moldova. The monastery was included in the National Patrimony from 1993. The church and the paintings from the outside and the ones from the inside and also the buildings that belong to it had been restaured by UNESCO and the Romanian Government between 1996 and 2000. Ruins of the old monastery were found in the archeological excavations that had been made.

On the wall from the outside there are only paintings of angels, right from under the roof, survived. The form of the roof protected them by the temperature differences, raining, snow and the direct contact with the sun.

During the recent restauration campaign of UNESCO, the painting from the 19th century was removed, and there was discovered the original painting. On the left side there can be seen the painting from the 19th century and on the left side the painting from the 16th century.

The graves that were found here are marked by pieces of glass placed between the bricks and the gravestones are placed along the walls. Under the floor a new heating system is included for maintaining a constant temperature and humidity on the interior of the church. The door from the North is the 9th, a replica of the one that preceeds it. The other 2 doors were cleaned and repaired and a few stone blocks were replaced. The 8 windows were replaced at the end of the 18th century.
