Balinesti

Year of construction: 1499

Location: Balinesti, Suceava county.

Summary: The shape of the church is simple. The rectangular body without any lateral apse and a polygonal estic apse, were quite usual during Stefan cel Mare’s reign.

Two rows of ninches, smaller above and bigger underneath, go round the church of all the facades. The Southern side is different from the others: an opened portal, with high gothic arches, made of stone. Traces of exterior mural pictures were found on the facades from east and west. These paintings were made during Petru Rares’s reign, between 1535-1538.

The exterior paintings must have had a remarkable quality, as it can be seen in the beautiful pictures of St Nicolau and St Mihail. On the west side of the church , there can be seen traces of the painting of The Last Judgement. This exterior painting was applied over the first deciration of the church.

St. Nicolau, the patron of Balinesti church, on a Southern façade. The painting dates from Petru Rares’s reign, 1535-1538.

They were decorated with fantastical creatures, from occidental or eraldical themes, in relief. This kind of ornamentation is characteristic to Stefan cel Mare’s reign and disappeared after the reign came to an end. The portal connects the exterior to the interior. It has 3 sides with openings, being covered with a gothic authentical arch with striations.

On the east there can be seen the paintings of the disciples, and above there is God.
