Soimos Citadel

Soimos

Soimos Citadel is situated on the right shore of Mures, close to Lipova village, being lying on the Cioaca Tautului hill. It was probably built after the first Tartar invasions. From a document from 1278 it is mentioned that the citadel was built by Pál, who donates the citadel called “Castrum Somos” to the sons of his brother. The citadel was the possession of many members of his family, following in the 14th century to go back in the possession of the voivode Ladislau Kán the second, who owned it through two subalterns, who were commits of Arad. In 1310 Ladislau Kán al II-lea also chose Alexander as a castellan and in the following year, Dominic.

After 1315 the Soimos Citadel becomes Regal Citadel, following that in the after the middle of the 15th century to be successively donated. From 1471 it belongs to Nicolae and Iacob Bánffy, but from 1487 it was taken by the king, becoming the possession of Ioan Corvin on the Muresului Valley.

On the middle of the 16th century it became pricier residence for the widow of Ioan Zápolya, Izabella, following to be given in 1551 to Andrei Báthory and to be conquered by the turkeys in 1552. Although it was released in 1595, the principle Gabriel Bethlen gave it to the Turkeys, who owned it until 26th of March 1688.

The domain of the citadel had at the end of the 15th century almost 100 states, from which some of them were situated on the territory of the other committee, Timis.

Although it had a military role, from the beginning of the 18th century, there wasn’t any other important event, so that in 1788 it was officially left and demolished.
