Coltesti Citadel

Coltesti

Coltesti citadel was built at the end of the 13th century as a place of living and refugee by Thorczkay, on the West of Coltesti from Alba county. The citadel was built as a result of the Tartars invasion in 1241, when significant damage has been produced to Rimetea and Coltesti. The dating of the citadel is precise also because of the fact that on the Northern tower it is found an inscription that mentions Thoroczkay family and the moment of its building.

It is an example of fortification adapted on the conditions of the area, being situated on a high place with cliffs and 2 slopes. The oldest stage is considered a donjon tower kept only partially and a second tower for living, which used to have 5 floors. The towers were connected to eachother by walls, forming an interior court. In Southern there was a building with many rooms, that belonged to 14-15th centuries and an interior court, protected by a barbican, a construction of the 16th century.

Matei Corvin takes the control of the citadel and gives it as a gift to the emperor  of Transylvania, and in 1510 Thoroczkay family has it back and 4 years later it is destroyed by the peasants ruled by Gheorghe Doja. The citadel is destroyed in 1713 by Austrians because of the striving of Thoroczkay family on the matter of annexing Transylvania by the Habsburg Empire. Because of this resistance the noble family was eliminated from the historical scene.
