The Bran Castle

Bran castle is situated close to Brasov, on the road between it and Campungulung, having been built on a cliff, in a strategical point. The castle was first a “passing” citadel, having a quadrate irregular shape, that was afterwards completed after Gabriel Bethlen’s plans, in 1622, with the tower from the South, the Southern tower and the rectangular tower on East. Between 1883 and 1886 the roof was covered by tiles, following to be transformed into castle in 1920 when it was property of Queen Mary.

The Brukenthal Castle from Avrig

The Brukenthal castle from Avrig, Sibiu county, was built in 1760, by the baron Samuel von Brukenthal, who was the the councilor of Maria Tereza and governor of Transylvania for 13 years. In 1761 the palace was leased by the baron Buccow, he arranged the construction like a castle with garden, in the barock style. The Brukenthal castle had 3 buildings in 1762, having the shape of an U, being compounded by a deck-floor and a floor. The hall was decorated by mural paintings and the garden disposed on terraces, with orangey.

The Cantacuzino Castle from Busteni

The Cantacuzino Castle from Busteni was built in 1910, in the Romanian style, with neo-brancoveanean elements, by the prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino. The castle is surrounded by a park, which has alleys that lead to little caverns, cascades and fountains. In the guest hall there is a heraldic collection, unique in Romania, that has the stems of all the lordly families and that are relatives of the Cantacuzino family and the natural-size paintings of the Cantacuzino’s predecessors.

The Cernovici Castle from Macea, Arad County, was built on the first half of the 19th century, in a neoclassic style. It was built in 2 stages, from which resulted an “L” shaped building edifice. The first part, until the big tower, decorated on the front with the symbol of the Cernovici family and has its provenience from 1862, and the right wing, on the other side of the tower; it was built 1862 and 1866 when there were always built annexed buildings.

The Corvinesti Castle, also called Corvinilor Castle or Huniazi Castle, is situated in Hunedoara, being the most important architectural monument from Transylvania. The castle was built on a cliff, close to Zlasti River. It was built in the 15thcentury by Iancu de Hunedoara, on the place of an old fortification.

The Daniel Castle from Covasna county was built by the adjunct captain of The Three Chairs, Daniel Mihály. He started building it probably in 1621, when he received new gifts on his domain from Talisoara from the principle Bethlen Gábor. The castle is built in late renascent style, much alike to the noble buildings from the Baraolt Depression.

The Haunting Castle from Lapusna

The Haunting castle Lapusna is situated in Lapusna village, Mures county, on an altitude of 815 meters, in Ghiurghiului Mountains, on the valley having the same name. It was built between 1925 and 1926 and belonged until 1949 to the royal family. Among the owners of the castle there are: Derdinand, Carol the 2nd, Mihai the 1st. As a result of the nationalization it became property of the state and during Nicolae Ceausescu it worked as a Presidential House, as a Haunting Castle, for high functions for the communist rulers.

The Dietrich-Sukowsky Castle from Pancota

The Dietrich-Sukovski castle from Pancota, Arad County, is situated in the centre of the town and nowadays it is the Town Hall of Pancota. The castle has an imposing aspect, especially because of the façade of the main wing, which is rich ornamented and the colored tiled roof. The attention of the visitors is kept by the beautiful doors made of cast iron and the windows.

The Castle from Fagaras

The castle from Fagaras, Brasov county, was built at the end of the 14th century, on the place of an old fortification, made of wood and mud. Between 1368 and 1464, the domain of Fagaras was under the ruling of the emperors of Tara Romaneasca. The first mention of the castle (by then a citadel) appears in a document from 1456, in which it is said that it has an irregular quadrate shape, having polygonal towers at the corners. They were afterwards named “The Round Tower”, “The Red Tower”, “The Thomori Tower” and “The Báthory Tower”.

The Foisor Castle from Sinaia

Foisor castle from Sinaia, Prahova county, is situated close to the Pelisor castle. The initial destination was a haunting house for Carol the 1st, but because of the fact that it was finished before the Peles Castle, the king and his wife, Elisabeta, lived here for a while. The castle was also used by King Ferdinand, who lived at Foisor together with his wife, Queen Mary, until Pelisor was finished. The castle was the place of birth of King Mihai the 1st, son of Carol the 2nd and of Elena, who lived here between 1930 and 1940.
