Patrauti Church

Patrauti

The “Sfanta Cruce” church from Patrauti is situated close to Suceava, on the right side of the road that goes to the North-West, that goes to Radauti, in the valley of Suceava river. Very well hidden in the forest, Patrauti village has been chosen as location for the only nuns monastery, founded by Stefan cel Mare. The church was built in 1487, as it appears on the commemorative inscription at its entrance

Together with the church from Misauti, the one from Patrauti marked the beginning of a long legendary campaign, for the building of what Stafean cel Mare wanted. Stefan gave to the church all that was necessary, but as the centuries passed it was abandoned at some point.

In 1711, The Radauti Episcope decided to refund the church, and starting from 1775 Bucovina became part of the Habsburgic Empire and right after it became the church of parishioners.

Some of the frescos from the church were painted right after the building was ready, others were painted after 10 years , during the last decade of the 15th century. These are not restored, they are very dark and covered by dust, but what is visible is dominated by the yellow light. The frescos represent the work of a great artist, many of the Saints’ faces looking like actual portraits. It was believed that the artist came from the Byzantine Empire, which had been conquered by the turkeys only few decades before, or that  he was instructed in the Byzantine style of painting.
