The Castle from Banloc

The

The Banloc castle is situated in Banloc, Timis county and was built in 1793 by Karátsonyi Lázár, following that from the beginning of the 19th century until the first years of the 20th century to be decorated the building and the park as well. The castle was devastated after the First World War, suffering even worse damages between 1948 and 1989. The count Karátsonyi-Keglevich Imre sold the castle and the park in 1935, to the ex-queen Elizabeth of Greece, the sister of Carol the 2nd of Romania. He renovates the whole complex and so the castle has a last period of glory. After the queen and the employees left, the statues from the park were destroyed, the archive and the library were burned.

The castle was built on a plan, having the shape of “U” letter, the walls being made of burned bricks with the main façade orientated to the South and to the North having 2 wings that formed a terraced court. The two wings have many decoration elements: the windows of the bridge have a Barrock shape, the relief in the walls having a well defined   thematic, the lamps made of forged iron. The façade of the castle has 2 massive gates, offering am interesting combination of elements inspired by the Egyptian architecture and the English neo-gothic architecture.

At the end of the alley bordered by pines there is Andrássy gate or Lions gate. The name of the gate and of the alley is given by Karátsonyi’s wife, Andrássy Karolina, and was adapted by the inhabitants of the town, under the name “The Andras Way”.
