The Apaffy Castle from Dumbraveni is situated 20 km Eastern Medias, in the waterside of Tarnava Mare. The Feudal Castle, having the form of a citadel, was built in the 16th century in the Renaissance style, by Grigore Apaffy, prefect of Dobaca county , who in 1552 bought all the domains that existed by then in Dumbraveni. The citadel-castle was attacked in 1562 during the Sachs revolt. As a result of the attack it suffered serious damages and it was necessary rebuilding and fortifying the castle with new bastions.

On 1590, Nicolae Appafy, the prefect of the Cetatea de Balta- Tarnava committee moves his official centre on the Dumbraveni castle, the domain of the citadel obtaining like that more and more the function Cetatea de Balta had.

After Grigore Apaffy died, the domain of the castle goes back in the possession of Mihai Appafy, who as a result of obtaining the title “Duke of Transylvania” , in the 16th September 1661 transforms the Dambraveni Market into regal residence.

During the Habsburgic domination, Dumbraveni was part of the 10 free towns from Transylvania. It was visited on the 1st of June 1733 by the emperor Iosif the 2nd, while he was traveling in Transylvania.

During the Revolution from 1848, the town is conquered 2 times by the general Bem József, who, together with Petőfi Sándor, one of the leaders of the Hungarian Revolution came here for 3 days.
