The purpose of the castle was to defend the mines and the mine workers in case of danger. Because of the Turkish expansion, in 1539 it was restaurated and fortified so that it could resist to their possible attacks.
It is considered that in the 18th century the old castle was demolished, being built a new one that has had left only one or two rooms from the old one. Now in the building there is a school that has 3 levels (the basement, the ground floor and the first level) with 3 entrances from which 2 are on the main façade.
